5 months on accutane (Sotret)!!!

January 3, 2008 · 15 Comments

Well, its month number , I have not started my sotret yet for this month, so far I have not taken the pills for 3 days….At some point during the prescription nightmare and preg tests,Liver test and the holidays, me and the derm had a communication breakdown and I cannot fill my prescription until Monday, that will be about 7 days off the medication.  The derm feels this is not a problem and things like these happen (mostly holiday and doctors office closing, confusion).

I am still very optimistic about the medication..Have felt alittle tired and the pain of two pills a day one in the am and i in the pm are starting to become a pain in the neck…Brings me back to the very start and saying to myself” I would do just about anything to have a normal face and skin” so I guess my complaining now is due to my face clearing 90% and now I am happy so why keep going with this for two more months….why , I asked the derm and she said the full course and patience are the keys to success….Right patience, you can’t take a pill for that.

I truly am happy with the results at this point, side effect going into month 5 are as follows…..not to bad dry lips anymore….alittle more tired than usual…..weight is staying the same (at the start, lost 7 lbs.) appetite suppression for me and that’s about it, some dryness of hair, but thankfully no loss and skin rash I developed on my hands which the derm gave me a script for lotion for had gone away completely.

Thats all for now folks, happy skin to you!

Hey I just finished my 1st month on Sotret. I am 24/M/150lbs. Doctor has me on 20mg/day. Skin started to clear in the 2nd week but now its becoming worse. I am having bad breakouts on my shoulders and back too. Did you feel any change when you were upped in the dosage i.e change in the results?

I have been on Sotret 40mg once a day for a month now and now my face broke out bad last week and this week my chin & half my neck are REALLY dry as well as my lips. Is that a normal side effect (the skin part) ? I o to the doctor next week but i don’t even want to go anywhere because i can not even out makeup on to cover it up ,it makes it look worse . Anyways Your advice and opinion on any thing that would help me during this time would be well taken!

Yes. I’m now in my fifth month of accutane. I was on a low dose for the first three months. When my dose was doubled the fourth month my face started breaking out worse. It is still breaking out and I am getting very frustrated but I am trying to hang in there. I think it’s different for everyone and you just have to wait it out. In the end it’ll be worth it.

Cookie, I’m only just about to start accutane, but I’ve read a lot about it so far, and one piece of advice I have to give you–don’t cut out all the fats! Accutane is absorbed much better in your system if eaten with fatty foods. That doesn’t mean you have to eat a lot of fatty foods–just something a bit fatty when you take your pill, such as maybe a piece of cheese, milk (2% or whole, I would think), peanut butter, or whatever. I’ve also read a lot of blogs about people saying they’re skin got real bad, like yours, during treatment–but it DOES clear up by the time the treatment is over. I dunno how it works, but that’s just what happens to some people.

I am 35 and unfourtately on my 2nd dose of Accutane. I was on it when it first came out about 12 years ago and my face did get better. But over the last 6 months I started to get bad cysts.. I can tell you that I am misrable. I do not know if I can go through this I only have one break out right now but it has been oooozing for 20 days.. the consistancy of my face looks weird and my eyes burn alittle….not sure I am going to make it through this

Hi 21/f here. I’ve been breaking out since I was 12 and decided to give accutane a try. I mainly break out around my period and I would say my acne severity was mild to moderate. Still after 10 years I was ready to nip this in the butt. So I’m entering my 3rd month in 2 days from now. I’d have to say month 2 has been pretty disappointing. My face is definitely worse than before I started. The accutane did get rid of blackheads and all those little clear bumps everywhere. I never had bad body acne but I can definitely tell my back feels so much smoother. As for my face, I keep getting cysts on my jawline and I never really had a problem with cysts before so this is so frustrating. I have red spots all over my cheeks and it just makes my face look so terrible! If I wear my hair over it, I feel better. Well my face isn’t too day but its not oily at all. My lips are chapped constantly and my ankles and upper back constantly ache. Good luck to everyone, this stuff better be worth all this stuff we have to go through!

I’m on my 3rd month 30mg 2 times day. There was not a clean spot on my face before I started. I had major acne and cysts on my underchin, mouth, cheeks and forehead. I began to see results within two weeks. my face has cleared up drastically by now, though I still get a few breakouts every now and then, but I look like a different person now, my friend says. My doctor prescribes accutane or sotret “dispense as written”. Doc says other generics do not work. To my dismay, my pharmacist said sotret has been recalled by the government, for what reason, I do not know. they are not making any more, so whenever the stock runs out (about a month), no more sotret, until the FDA approves it. I haven’t talked to my doc about it yet. just found out today. did anyone hear anything about this?

The acne forms under the skin. so i think the medicine brings forth the acne to the outer layers of your skin, so you can see all the acne, and then it gets rid of it once its out of your skin like that.
its just digging out all the poop inyour face. depending on how much poop you have, is how much you’ll break out

I know this is a year late, but for anyone else reading this in the future:
I’m on my 5th, and hopefully final, month of 20mg/day. I had heard that you get an initial breakout in the first few weeks and then it would clear. However, this wasn’t the case for me. I had horrible breakouts throughout. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that my skin finally stopped breaking out and all existing breakouts started to heal. So, I guess what I’m saying is ‘hang in there’…by the end of your treatment it will clear up. It won’t be easy, but it’s worth it. I just hope it stays clear once I finish my course. Good luck!

    hey there,
So yeah anyone in the starting months you gotta just hang in there, I had it real real bad for like 2 or 3 months but im nearing the end of my 5th month and my face is literally 90-95% clear, my derm even called me “a walking billboard for accutane” It just happens, mostly in the 4th month, the 5th is mostly smoothing of the face and any bad scars, etc(which i still have one from a particularly bad cyst). Just hang in there I promise it’s worth it!

I am on my 4th month of Sotret and all of the symptoms you guys are saying fit. Your lips will get REALLY REALLY DRY. I have Vaseline with me where ever I go. Also, you mean see your skin dry out ALOT. This is completely normal because the medicine strips the natural oils in your body. An extra moisturizing lotion should do the trick. As far as breaking out while taking Sotret, I did notice my back and chest breaking out more. But, as time progressed the breakouts subsided. If there is one word of advice I can give you, it would be to keep at it. It’s a long and painful process, but well worth it. Good luck!

I have bee done with accutane for over a year! I lost a little hair about 6 months after I finished but it was worth it! I now am acne free and its one less worry off my mind. I don’t even think about it anymore.
